Red star rising: the communist caucuses steering America's largest socialist group

The Democratic Socialists of America wants the 120,000 number to read as arrival. Read it instead as leverage. The organization the group says it has built is not steered by its 120,000 dues-payers. It is steered by a handful of disciplined communist caucuses that recruit inside it, contest its leadership, and write its resolutions.

This is not infiltration. The caucuses publish their platforms. Red Star calls itself a revolutionary Marxist-Leninist pole. The Marxist Unity Group writes, in a 2025 convention resolution, that the aim is a party surrogate in form and a clean break in content. The Liberation Caucus lists Marxism-Leninism-Maoism on the masthead. The record is not hidden. It is posted.

The caucuses do not hide their aims. They print them.

Follow the structure. DSA merged into existence in 1982 from Michael Harrington's Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee and the New American Movement. The founding bet was realignment: work inside the Democratic Party, win reforms, stay electoral. After 2016 the membership ran from roughly 6,000 to a peak near 94,000 by 2021. Then came budget cuts and layoffs. Then came Zohran Mamdani's mayoral win and a fresh recruitment surge the group now prices at 120,000.

The number grew. So did the discipline. At national convention the group hardened an anti-Zionist red line, putting expulsion on the table for members or endorsed officials who provide what it calls material support to Israel. Eugene Debs ran the old Socialist Party as a mass electoral vehicle with broad reach. The modern DSA keeps the ballot line and hosts factions built on Leninist discipline over the people who hold it.

That is the mechanism. A decentralized big tent lets small organized poles move the whole. Red Star pushes revolutionary Marxism as the central pole and demands discipline over elected officials, up to pulling endorsements from figures it judges insufficiently radical. The Marxist Unity Group argues in print for overthrowing the constitutional order to install a democratic socialist republic. Communist Caucus and Emerge run base-building in labor and tenant organizing. Bread and Roses works the rank-and-file strategy inside target industries. Reporting on the National Political Committee indicates that in recent years close to half its members have identified as communist.

The label endures for the appeal. The substance is the party-building.

The foreign work is where branding and substance part. Since 2021 the DSA International Committee has sent delegations to Venezuela, where members met Maduro, and to Cuba and China. The trips ran on state-linked facilitation and high-level access. The messaging that followed opposed U.S. sanctions and defended the host governments' elections.

The China Working Group held webinars on socialism with Chinese characteristics and, per its own minutes, discussed structured engagement with the Communist Party of China. DSA joined the São Paulo Forum, the hemisphere's Chavista and communist coordinating network. On Ukraine and NATO the line has at times echoed the anti-imperialism that minimizes Russian conduct.

Not every member signed up for this. One dissenter put it plainly in an International Committee meeting: this is not what a majority of members joined for. The dissent is real. The trajectory holds anyway, because the trajectory is set by the caucuses that show up, not the members who drift in through a progressive wave and drift out.

The 120,000 figure buys platforms and legitimacy. It also magnifies an organization where communist poles function as the engine of radicalization. The governance test is coming in New York, where a DSA-aligned mayor now has to choose between the reformist promise and the revolutionary pressure. The dues keep the lights on. The caucuses keep the direction. The democratic qualifier is doing a lot of work.

America's largest socialist organization carries communist DNA in its leadership, its resolutions, and its foreign delegations. The 120,000 milestone is a milestone. The question is which tendency spends it.
