SECURITY GUARDS STOPPED IT.

Temple Israel, West Bloomfield, Michigan. 140 children inside. Not one of them hurt. The attacker is dead. And New York's mayor — who just broke bread at Gracie Mansion with a man whose movement praised Hamas — wants you to believe he's outraged.

At roughly 12:40 PM today, a man drove a truck loaded with mortar shells and what law enforcement sources describe as a chemical agent through the front doors of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan — the nation's largest Reform Jewish congregation — barreled approximately 40 feet down a hallway, and died.

Inside the building: 140 children.

Every single one of them walked out alive.

That's not luck. That is what preparedness looks like when the people responsible for it take the job seriously.

WHAT HAPPENED

The FBI conducted active shooter training at Temple Israel as recently as January 30th of this year NPR — six weeks before someone tried to turn it into a kill zone. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard told reporters he had been sharing intelligence and communicating with local houses of worship for the past two weeks Michigan Advance, specifically anticipating an attack. When the truck hit the doors, the security team was ready. They engaged. The attacker is dead.

One lead security guard was struck by the vehicle, knocked unconscious, and hospitalized. He is expected to recover. He is a hero. Full stop.

The suspect arrived armed with a rifle. Mortar shells were discovered in the rear of the vehicle. Police sources confirmed a chemical agent was found inside the truck, indicating some sort of explosive device was present. FOX 2 Detroit Something ignited — whether the suspect died from security gunfire or from his own payload remains unclear. His body was so badly burned it complicated identification CBS News, and as of this writing, his name has not been released.

FBI, ATF, and ICE's Homeland Security Investigations division were all on scene CNN within the hour. HSI's presence alongside FBI and ATF is notable — that combination signals investigators are already pulling hard on the suspect's background, travel, and connections.

Motive has not been officially declared. Sheriff Bouchard said it's "too early" to call it terrorism. Temple Israel did not share that restraint. Their own statement called it a terrorist attack and referred to the suspect as "a terrorist gunman." NPR They're right.

ANOTHER MIRACLE. SAME PATTERN.

Two Sundays ago, ISIS-inspired bombers threw improvised explosive devices at a protest outside Gracie Mansion in New York City. No one was seriously hurt. The perpetrators were arrested and charged with use of a weapon of mass destruction.

Today, a truck loaded with mortars and a chemical agent drove into a Jewish preschool in suburban Detroit. No children were hurt. The attacker is dead.

Two attacks. Two near-catastrophes. Two outcomes that look like miracles but were actually the product of preparation, intelligence-sharing, and security personnel who did not hesitate.

The common thread is not luck. The common thread is that somebody was paying attention.

The broader trajectory deserves to be stated plainly. In December 2025, two gunmen opened fire on families celebrating Hanukkah at Sydney's Bondi Beach, killing 15 people. In October 2025, two Jewish worshippers were killed in a car ramming outside a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur. In February 2026, a pickup truck rammed the gates of Brisbane's largest synagogue. CNN Today someone tried to add a Michigan preschool to that list. This attack unfolded two weeks into the U.S. and Israel-led war against Iran, which began February 28th. West Bloomfield sits roughly 20 miles from Dearborn — the largest Arab-American population center in the United States.

The pattern is not ambiguous. The threat is not ambiguous. The only question is whether the people in charge of protecting Jewish communities are taking it seriously — or performing outrage while doing something very different behind the scenes.

ABOUT THAT OUTRAGE

Within hours of the West Bloomfield attack, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted on X calling it "horrifying," offering his thoughts to the Temple Israel congregation, and announcing the NYPD would deploy high-visibility patrols to Jewish religious and cultural institutions across the five boroughs. Let's talk about what else Zohran Mamdani has been doing.

Last week — five days before a truck bomb hit a Jewish preschool — Mamdani hosted Mahmoud Khalil at Gracie Mansion for an iftar dinner. Khalil was the organizer and spokesperson for Columbia University Apartheid Divest, the anti-Zionist protest alliance whose group distributed Hamas propaganda, praised violent "resistance" by Palestinians, and explicitly celebrated the October 7, 2023 massacre. The Times of Israel He is detained by the Trump administration pending deportation. Mamdani's own chief counsel, Ramzi Kassem, is one of Khalil's lawyers.

That is the mayor of New York City breaking bread at his official residence with a man whose movement explicitly celebrated the slaughter of Jewish civilians. Five days later, he's posting about how "horrifying" antisemitic violence is.

The UJA-Federation of New York and the Jewish Community Relations Council — two organizations not known for picking political fights — pushed back publicly, saying the incidents raised "deep concerns" and calling on Mamdani to live up to his own rhetoric. The Times of Israel

This sits on top of a record that speaks for itself. In January — Mamdani's first full month in office — NYPD data showed antisemitic hate crimes in New York City had increased 182%, accounting for more than half of all hate crime incidents that month. CBN The ADL called the numbers "staggering."

And what did Mamdani do on Day One? He revoked the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism and moved to allow city employees to participate in the BDS movement against Israel. CBN He has refused to march in the Israel Day Parade. He has threatened to arrest Netanyahu for war crimes if he sets foot in New York.

Now he's sending cops to stand outside synagogues.

The NYPD patrols are necessary and correct. Deploy them. Double them if needed. But patrols are downstream of policy. And policy in this city flows from a mayor who decided that a man whose movement praised October 7 deserved an iftar dinner at Gracie Mansion — the same week the United States and Israel are at war with Iran and Jewish institutions across the country are on heightened alert.

There's a word for the gap between what a politician says and what a politician does. We've been tracking it since January 1st.

Today just made it impossible for anyone else to look away.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The suspect is dead and — as of this writing — unidentified. The FBI briefed publicly at 6 PM. The investigation is active. The motive will come out.

What we know right now: someone loaded a truck with mortars, a chemical agent, and a rifle and drove it into a building full of Jewish children on a Thursday afternoon in suburban Detroit. The only reason this is not a mass casualty story tonight is that a security team did their jobs under the worst possible conditions.

The guards trained. The guards prepared. The guards won.

The rest of the country — and the politicians claiming to be horrified tonight — need to decide whether they're willing to do the same.
