The DSA Members Who Signed Beijing's Loyalty Pledge

They signed it in their own names.

Friends of Socialist China, a London-based platform, runs a public pledge to support the People's Republic of China and promote what it calls Chinese socialism. The New York Post, reporting July 30, following The Times of London, identified eleven signatories who describe themselves as members of the Democratic Socialists of America or its International Committee. The group's list claims 952 names in all. Affiliations are supplied by the signers.

Two hold titles. Mirah Wood signs as Co-Chair of the Middle East and Africa Subcommittee of the DSA International Committee. John McGrath signs from the Committee's anti-war lane in the United Kingdom. Both appear in archived versions of the list as far back as 2022. Dee Knight, a Committee and China Working Group member, sits on the front group's own advisory council, though the reporting reviewed here does not list him among the pledge's signers.

The text does not hedge. It calls the global advance to socialism indispensable if humanity is to survive and flourish. It calls capitalism totally incapable of solving poverty and inequality, and inextricably linked to war, empire, racism, and environmental destruction. Then the operative clause: the signatories resolve to support, defend and build understanding of Chinese socialism. And it goes further, declaring that the continued survival of Chinese socialism is a crucial matter not only for the Chinese people but for all humanity.

Read that as what it is. Not an opinion about a foreign country. A pledge of custodianship, taken on behalf of a foreign state, by Americans, in their own names.

The DSA did not respond to the Post's request for comment. Say the limit plainly, because the story does not need it inflated: these are individual signatures, some by people holding Committee roles, not an official DSA institutional endorsement of the platform. The organization signed nothing.

But we have written before about what this particular committee is for.

The committee that handles the logistics

In April we reported that the DSA International Committee is the arm that conducts the organization's foreign outreach without generating unfavorable coverage. It has traveled under the DSA banner to meet government officials in Cuba and Venezuela, including Nicolás Maduro. It has partnered with the People's Forum, the Manhattan operation tied to the Neville Roy Singham network. When DSA leadership needs to run foreign business quietly, the International Committee handles it.

That was the thesis. This pledge is the thesis surfacing in daylight. The same committee, the same personnel category, now signing a foreign state's loyalty declaration under their own names rather than routing it through a delegation and a photo op. The deniability is what broke. The function did not change.

And the pledge is helpful enough to explain its own logic. Asked in its own text, "Why China?", it answers that it supports all states building socialism but foregrounds China because its size and level of development give it, in the document's words, an objectively critical role in the global transition to socialism. It calls Beijing the most prominent force pushing a new international order. Read that the way you would read a translated cable, because that is what it is: a front group stating the doctrine plainly, and Americans co-signing it.

The population was prepared first

The pledge did not appear from nowhere. It sits atop a documented, multi-year process, and the documentation is not ours. It is the DSA's own.

Newsweek, reporting in early 2026 on dozens of internal DSA materials going back to 2021, showed the International Committee and its China Working Group discussing contact with Chinese officials, positive-messaging strategy, and the planning of exchanges. In a June 2023 meeting, members praised what they called a Code Pink tactic of avoiding politically sensitive Communist Party subjects. Code Pink co-founder Jodie Evans then briefed the group and, per the minutes, told them to stay out of the weeds and focus on points that are easier to sell. One such point was Chinese poverty alleviation, which the group planned US events to promote.

Read the self-censorship slowly, because it is the tell. A group deciding in advance which of the sponsor's subjects it will keep off the table has already accepted the sponsor's frame. And the itinerary was not theoretical: a members' trip to the Xinjiang region reported around 2023, an August 2025 visit to Guizhou preserved in an internal slideshow, China Working Group members received as VIPs by provincial officials.

Then the sequencing, which is the part worth slowing down for. A few weeks before the DSA launched its monthly seminar series on modern China and lessons for US socialists, a five-person delegation flew to Beijing to mark China's eightieth anniversary of victory over Japan. Trip first. Then the classroom. Dee Knight described the Beijing events as an impressive display of unity in multipolarity, featuring Putin, Modi, and Kim Jong Un. And when the seminar opened, one of its claims, per the Post, was that China has a strong democracy. There was no mention of China's restrictions on speech. That is not an oversight. That is the record being inverted in real time, in an American political education program.

Not everyone inside was comfortable. One International Committee member is quoted in the minutes objecting outright: this isn't what I signed up for, and there's no way you can be part of the organization and promote the things they're doing. The dissent is real, and it belongs in the record. It also lost.

Why this is a method, not a coincidence

The procedure on display is not improvised.

In 1984 a former KGB informant, Yuri Bezmenov, described the least cinematic instrument in the Soviet kit. Not the mole. The willing signatory. The Western believer who lends his name to a solidarity statement he was never paid to sign, because he has already been persuaded the adversary is the moral party. Bezmenov called the long first phase demoralization. The target does the work himself. No handler required.

The Soviet apparatus institutionalized this in the front organization: a Western address, a benign name, a stated peace-or-solidarity mission, existing to launder a foreign line into domestic discourse through people who believed they acted purely on conviction. The World Peace Council was the model. The technique was portable by design. It needed no command, only a receptive population and a plausible letterhead.

Friends of Socialist China is the letterhead, ported forward and aimed at a new principal. And the sequence runs the way the old ones ran. First, contact and curated exposure, the trips. Then education that inverts the record, the seminar. Then a pledge that converts the educated into defenders, the pledge's own verb. Every step here is documented, most of it in the DSA's own minutes. None of it requires a string pulled in Beijing. The portability is the whole point, and it is the finding we keep returning to in this publication: the machine that matters is not a foreign agent, it is a domestic infrastructure a foreign state can rent. This is the influence version. Same architecture, different input.

The part that is no longer marginal

The reaction reached for the oldest word in the file. Law professor Jonathan Turley called the episode the very manifestation of what the Soviets called the useful idiots of the American elite. He was not being colorful. He was being precise.

And the context is what gives the pledge its weight. A Washington Post-Ipsos poll released July 30 found 75 percent of Democrats would be open to supporting a democratic socialist for president, even as 55 percent of all adults would not. A separate CNN/SSRS poll found roughly one-third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults now call themselves democratic socialists outright. The movement's foreign-policy wing is not a footnote to that rise. The same DSA whose co-chair has publicly embraced abolishing the Senate, ICE, and the borders is the DSA whose International Committee members are signing loyalty pledges to Beijing. Its most prominent elected figure, a longtime DSA member, now runs New York City. We wrote in April about an organization modeling itself on a vanguard as it crossed 100,000 members. It has kept growing since.

Bezmenov's warning was never that a front group would seize the state. It was that a demoralized society loses the capacity to assess evidence placed directly in front of its face. A pledge that calls the record propaganda, signed by Americans coached for a year not to raise the record, is that lost capacity rendered in signatures.

The names are on the document. The apparatus that put them there is on record, much of it in the signers' own minutes, and some of it in ours. The only open question is which officials and editors will now read that record, and which will do what the seminar taught, and quietly decline to raise the sensitive subjects.
