SECTION I: THE MONEY — OR, "WHO PAID FOR ALL THOSE REELS?"

KEY INTELLIGENCE:

  • Campaign spend: $7.9 million (public match cap)
  • Public matching funds from NYC taxpayers: ~$10 million
  • Transition fundraising: $3.7 million â€” four times de Blasio, four times Adams
  • Percentage of transition donors from outside New York: more than 50%
  • Illegal foreign donations identified: $13,000 across 170+ donors from Dubai, Australia, Turkey, France, Germany, Canada
  • Amount actually returned: $9,000. The math on that is left as an exercise for the reader.

Let us begin with the money, because the money always tells you what the words are carefully designed not to.

Zohran Mamdani raised more for his transition team than any mayor in recent New York history — which is notable because transitions are largely ceremonial. You don't need $3.7 million to hire a few deputies and pick out drapes for Gracie Mansion. You need $3.7 million if you are building an apparatus. And more than half of it came from people who don't live here, don't vote here, and apparently don't think the New York City Campaign Finance Board reads its own filings.

Among the illegal foreign donors: his mother-in-law in Dubai, who dropped $500 into the campaign kitty. In fairness, every family chips in. Fewer families have their contributions flagged by the Coolidge Reagan Foundation in a formal criminal complaint to the Manhattan District Attorney.

The campaign's response when caught? Return $9,000 of the $13,000 and declare the matter closed. Which is the financial equivalent of a restaurant being cited for 13 health code violations, fixing nine of them, and putting up a five-star Yelp page.

SECTION II: THE INFLUENCER INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX — OR, "PRAVDA BUT MAKE IT AESTHETIC"

KEY INTELLIGENCE:

  • First mayoral press event: Invitation-only for influencers. January 6, 2026.
  • ManyChat automated DMs deployed: 144,000+
  • Instagram engagement vs. rival: 14x higher
  • Online conversation ratio vs. Cuomo: 30-to-1
  • Office of Mass Engagement funding: $64 million in proposed ethnic media restructuring

Here is a thing that happened: on January 6, 2026, the mayor of the largest city in America held his first official press availability. Journalists — you know, the people whose actual job is to ask difficult questions on behalf of the public — were not invited. Instead, the administration summoned a curated group of content creators to City Hall, gave them access, fed them talking points, and sent them back to their Ring Lights to produce favorable content.

This is called information management. In less democratic contexts, it has other names.

The campaign itself was a masterclass in what we will charitably call manufactured authenticity. The videos looked scrappy and real. They were, in fact, produced by professionals with cinematic color grading. The "grassroots" energy was real — but it was also being automated through 144,000 ManyChat DMs that users believed were personal messages from an actual human. The Instagram reach came through an unreleased feature that Instagram itself "hadn't figured out how to rein in".

In other words, the whole aesthetic of authenticity was a product. A very good product. One that beat $56 million in opposition Super PAC spending, which means it was worth — conservatively — $56 million in conventional advertising value that never appeared on any finance disclosure.

The Office of Mass Engagement — signed into existence on Day 2 of the administration â€” then codified all of this into a government bureau with $64 million in funding, theoretically designed to "reach communities" but structurally designed to make ethnic and community media financially dependent on the mayor they are supposed to cover. The CUNY Center for Community Media said so publicly. Nobody with a large Instagram following said anything.

SECTION III: THE FAMILY BUSINESS — OR, "IT'S NOT NEPOTISM IF IT'S IDEOLOGY"

KEY INTELLIGENCE:

  • Father Mahmood Mamdani: Columbia professor, Gaza Tribunal Policy Council member
  • Gaza Tribunal co-member: Ramy Abdo, identified by Israeli intelligence as a Hamas operative in Europe
  • Gaza Tribunal affiliate: Sami Al-Arian, convicted in U.S. federal court of conspiracy to support Palestinian Islamic Jihad
  • Father's public act during 2024 campus protests: First Columbia faculty member to address the pro-Hamas encampment
  • Mother: Co-founder of BDS-aligned organizations
  • Resurfaced video: Father comparing Abraham Lincoln to Adolf Hitler

You have to admire the Mamdani family's commitment to the bit. Most political families have a relative who says something mildly embarrassing at Thanksgiving. The Mamdanis have a patriarch who compared Abraham Lincoln to Adolf Hitler on camera, a mother who co-founded BDS organizations, and a father who chose — of all the faculty members at Columbia University, in all the universities in all the world — to be the first professor to walk into the pro-Hamas encampment and address the crowd.

This is the intellectual environment in which the Mayor of New York City was raised. We are not saying the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. We are saying the orchard has been mapped, photographed, and subpoenaed.

The Gaza Tribunal connection deserves special attention because it is the kind of detail that, in a functioning media environment, would be on the front page of every newspaper in the country. Mahmood Mamdani — a Columbia University professor with extraordinary academic prestige â€” sits on a policy council alongside a man Israeli intelligence identified as one of Hamas's main operatives in Europe. Another Tribunal affiliate was convicted in U.S. federal court of supporting a designated terrorist organization. Mahmood Mamdani is not a fringe character. He is the intellectual foundation of his son's political identity.

Zohran has said so himself.
